PACE OF PLAY – NOTICE

PACE OF PLAY – NOTICE

Dear Members,
We have noticed that slow play has become a significant problem at Hartfield in recent times, especially with the upcoming winter season and shorter days. The issue is that 10% of our members do not maintain their position in the field during competitions, resulting in rounds that take between 4:45 and 5 hours. This is a concern to the Match Committee.

We have come up with some possible solutions to address this problem:

  1. Shotgun Starts: This option guarantees that you will complete your round, but it also means that the speed of play is determined by the slowest group in the field. Additionally, the start and finish times will both be earlier and later than many of our members prefer.
  2. Reduce Field Sizes: This is the easiest way to ensure that our fields finish on time, but it means that we would have to cut the field sizes by 16-24 players. This is not an option that we would like to take since it means that some members would miss out on their game of golf.
  3. Correct the Playing Speed: We need to correct the playing speed of the 10% of members who are causing the problem. We know that this is a familiar topic, but we have analyzed data collected from rounds played and have established an acceptable total round time and a maximum finishing gap time between each group.

From this analysis, we discovered that 10% of our groups fail to meet two parameters: a round time of 4:15 minutes or less and/or having a gap of less than 14 minutes between them and the group in front. Please note that round completion times are recorded when you submit your score on the MiScore App.

Starting from Saturday, May 11th, 2024, any group that fails to meet both of these criteria will receive a letter from the Club Captain informing them of this. Multiple breaches by the same player will result in tee-off time restrictions and score cancellations.

It’s essential to note that 90% of our membership meets these criteria, so they have nothing to worry about. For those groups that receive a letter, please take the advice given in the right way. We will not entertain members who blame other members in the group for slow play. You must work together as a collective to maintain your position in the field.

Best regards,

Match Committee

Division 6             –              George Green
Division 7             –              Jamie Moorby
Division 8             –              Ryan Watson

We have a very strong squad, which I’ll cover more in next month’s newsletter. A Big thank you to Mike Dunsmore for his sterling effort managing thvision 2 for the last few years.

  • We have had an unprecedented number of applications from our members, to participate in Pennants. Thank you to all those who put their hand up. We had over 100 members applying to play this year, which is a testament to the health of our club.
  • Over the coming weeks we will be conducting training, grading, and some competitions to select our final teams for the upcoming season.
  • We may be able to get another Div 7 team …So watch this space.

Match

  • Juniors and Visitors winning senior prizes in competitionsIf you are eligible to play in the competition then you can win the prizes. The exception being Monthly Mug which is for Members only.
  • Competitions – The new midweek 9-hole competition on Tuesdays did not get enough support so will be removed. As I said in my last newsletter, your support will make it a permanent fixture… It didn’t and so it has been benched!
  • The first split competition went well, we did have an issue with some slow play in the afternoon field and I have followed this up with the groups responsible.
  • Pace of play – The Match Committee are looking at introducing a new automated system that identifies all players on the course using a tag system. This will mean that repeat offenders can be easily identified and action taken to prevent them impacting future rounds. In the meantime… Please Go Faster!

Remember to keep up with the group in front

 Course

  • As we enjoy the beautiful grounds of our golf course, it’s important to remember our responsibility to preserve and protect the natural environment surrounding us. To that end, I kindly ask that all members who use golf buggies keep the carts on designated pathways and fairways. This small act can make a big difference in protecting our precious bushland from unnecessary By staying on designated paths, we can ensure our course remains not only beautiful, but also environmentally sustainable. Thank you for your cooperation.
  • A blue line will go across the fairways very soon, as a “Do Not Cross’ line for carts around the greens. Please adhere to this to protect our high traffic points in the cooler/wetter months.
  • Rakes & Bunkers – Please self-police within your groups. We have a procedure for rakes (whether you agree with it or not). Not doing the “right thing” impacts your fellow members and is not within the spirit of our club.
  • Duty of Care – We have lots of “Big Hitters” at our club. Please be mindful of the group ahead of you. “I didn’t mean to hit it that far” is not a valid excuse. If you are a victim of someone playing up dangerously, then PLEASE report it. Myself and the Match committee will address it. Do Not take matters into your own hands.
  • Booking a round – The booking sheets are filling up, as we all enjoy our golfing days, let’s remember to be considerate when booking tee times. No shows not only impact the playing field but also may have prevented a member from getting a tee time. Please be considerate of your commitments and communicate any changes promptly. Let’s ensure that everyone has the opportunity to play and enjoy their time on our course. Thank you for understanding and cooperation.
  • Walking off the course – It’s important to uphold the values of sportsmanship and fair play whilst out on the course. I have received a few complaints lately of members walking off mid-round due to having a bad round. Walking off not only disrupts the game for your playing partners but goes against the spirit of golf (nobody said it was easy!).
  • New Members – Our current playing membership stands at over 800+ which is fantastic news, our booking sheets are not bursting at the seams just yet.

Around the club

  • The paving around the club looks great! Big thank you to Doully and his team for their efforts.
  • Volunteers – In my last newsletter I gave a special mention to our ‘front of house” volunteers. This time round I’d like to highlight a couple who work hard to support Nick. Firstly to Vince Grant for his indefatigable effort on maintaining our flora around the course and Mike Naumoff for your constant assistance in keeping our equipment in serviceable condition (and bending my ear tirelessly!) Both your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Dear Members, I’d like to finish by saying it’s not all about the bad bits, we have lots of good too!!

It’s up to all of us as members to do the right thing and uphold the strong values of our club.

Whilst it is essential to address any issues and seek improvement, we should also applaud what our club has to offer. By constructive communication and highlighting areas for concern, we can focus on actions that benefit our club.

Together we can all continue to enjoy our club’s success and maintain it’s positive reputation as a golfing challenge.

I will strive to communicate as much as possible in the newsletters and Thank You for your continued support and commitment.

Kind Regards,

Paul
Captain
